Handmade American Viola, Sound Sample – Schubert Arpeggione Sonata-played by student Violinist
One of several violas in this collection; played by a student violinist. The piece is an excerpt from Schubert’s Arpeggione (written for cello). This viola is part of a collection of fine instruments that are being sound sampled here on Youtube. For the most part, these instruments have not been played in many years. These student violinists are taking them out of the case, tuning them and playing them sight unseen…old strings, etc.

correct…it was writtenforthe arpeggionne, a six-stringed, fretted instrument that was tuned like a guitar and played with a bow…my reference was in terms of modern play. are you a violist? i’m a violinist, but took a chance trying this piece out on this viola…i guess i’ll never play viola

This is a really sweet viola. I have an Alfred Vidoudez viola which doesn’t have the nearly the tonal qualities of this one. You play well for a violinist, lol.

thanks for commenting. this is one of the nicest violas i’ve ever played. i tried a very expensive italian viola and it wasn’t even close to the deep resonance on this american viola. i didn’t really do this instrument justice. i’m not a violist; never had a lesson–i study the violin and just dabble with viola for fun (i didn’t have a viola bow, so i had to use my violin bow).
