The proper technique is so important so that you can not only get the sound you want but to avoid injury. But some books that I think are superb is the Suzuki method. I found them at my library, you also may other starter violin books there. I learnt the violin at a "later" ( of sorts) age with no past musical experience so no worries when it come to that!
