The string hole is drilled so that the string is right up against the edge of the peg box after the peg is turned enough to bring the string up to tension. But as time goes on, and the peg gets turned and pushed every time you tune, the peg shank and the hole eventually wear a little bit, and the peg pushes further and futher in. So the hole ends up too far across the peg box, and eventually the string in the string hole may even prevent you from pushing the peg tight.
