Actually, the best way to control humidity is to make sure the instrument is consistently stored in a moderate setting and to control the humidity of that room (in my case, my bedroom).

Violinists have to be really careful with those dampits. I’ve seen a violin owned by a teenager that was a really fine instrument, but was ruined by water dripping from a dampit. I only saw it when it was opened for repair, so I don’t know what state it was finally restored to… I hope it’s ok.
