One of the better violin music books to start out with is the Suzuki Violin School. It's easy to find them and I thought they were very helpful when I first started private violin lessons. You'll find as you get more experienced, that the Suzuki violin School books aren't as great. Once you get around book six of the Suzuki violin School, try playing some other music like Bach's Sonata's and Partitas.
References :
6 years of playing the violin

It's really not a good idea to try to teach yourself the violin, with books or movies or otherwise. You really need a teacher, at least at the beginning - it's far too tempting to advance yourself to more complicated material before you're really ready for it, and a book can't tell you when you're doing something wrong (holding the bow incorrectly, poor fingering technique, bad intonation). If you ever want the option of playing with a group (and it's not out of the question - I started the violin at age 23 and was playing with a local symphony at 25), start with a teacher.
References :
I recently went through the same thing. I bought a violin for my girlfriend for Christmas. I would recommend the Violin for dummies book. I heard a lot of good things for it in my searches. The dummies series books seem to be well written for beginners anyway. Here is a link to a place to order it online.
