Sound sample of a fine, old Austrian violin. The piece is an excerpt of the Conus Violin Concerto in e minor being played for the first time in almost 2 years by a student violinist. Julius Conus (also spelled Konius) was a Russian composer. Written in 1898 this piece was first performed by Ivan Galamian with Conus’s daughter as his accompanist. A couple of years later, Fritz Kreisler began performing it, but it was Jasha Heifetz who brought to public attention and first recorded it.

We have a 14 year old daughter that plays the violin with the passion of music. All teachers and tutors say she has lots of potencial, but it’s a hard field to get in with success. She is thinking about Peaboady. She is a freshman and a straight A in all honors classes. How hard is it out there to get in for a double degree with Hopkins? We can’t really afford it, what about schollarships based on her talent?

Check with her guidance counselor. They should be fairly knowledgeable about scholarship opportunities. Alternatively, write to the schools she is interested in, and research other "net" schools where the instruction is strong, but member of the competition are less numerous. Good luck!
